Algorithms for the Beginner

Want to know what algorithms are about and how you can use them? Come to this session to learn about the different types of algorithms, how you can use them, and why you should be using this fantastic PowerFAIDS feature. To get the most out of this session, be sure to bring an idea or two about algos you would like to write in your database (examples include coding an SEOG award for half of a student’s Pell award, creating scholarship ranges based on a student’s GPA range, or multiplying the tuition rate times the student’s number of credits). This will help you begin to see how this feature can change how you use PowerFAIDS.

Using Roger van Oech’s “Creative Whack Pack” as a jumping-off point, we will examine your real life work dilemmas. Bring an example of a thorny problem you are having at work, and together let’s look at it creatively.

Exporting Custom Reports to External Systems

Custom Reports can be used to export data to external systems where you can make your reports fancy, manipulate the data, share information with other offices, or even import newly-configured information back into PowerFAIDS. This session will demonstrate ways you can utilize the export function in Report Writer.

Financial Aid Services Update (IDOC, PROFILE, FAST)

During the Financial Aid Services update we will review planned enhancements to PROFILE, Noncustodial PROFILE (NCP), and IDOC for the 2007-2008 academic year. This session will provide detailed information about the enhanced customization of the PROFILE effective October and how this new adaptive PROFILE will function with PowerFAIDS. We will review the data received thus far from the INAS options survey and discuss new options for 2007-08. We will review the outcome of the electronic notification feature in IDOC, update you on IDOC usage, and introduce several new IDOC features.

Going with the Flows: Preparing for your Transition to New PowerFAIDS

Come learn about the steps your institution needs to take to make your transition to New PowerFAIDS a success. From defining security groups to preparing your letters to planning training, this session will show how you can start your transition well in advance of your actual planned conversion date. The first part of this session will focus on planning for implementation and what you can do in your Classic database to make the process a smooth one. The second part of this session will focus on the conversion of your database and what to expect in the new environment, and how to keep staff moving forward using the New PowerFAIDS.

Identifying Low-income Families - Going Beyond the AGI

Are you having difficulty identifying truly low income students in order to award your institutional financial aid funds equitably? When you review parents' tax returns, are you surprised about hidden family resources that aren't apparent on the student's FAFSA? This session will explore tools that can be used to better identify low income students earlier in the application cycle. We will look at the data collected on the College Board's PROFILE Application, review how PROFILE fee waivers are awarded, discuss why you might want to collect data from noncustodial parents , and review on-going efforts to simplify the aid application for the lowest-income students.
